Another reposted request from a few years back.
A little bebop. This one from the Capitol Classics series. Some really great stuff on this one including a couple of vocal tracks by the ever entertaining Babs Gonzales.
As much as I love the fiery intensity of the the small bebop combos, I really enjoy this big band stuff. Particularly when no one is about and you can crank it up on the stereo. The way the orchestra punches is like a loving kick in the chops.
The line up on these tracks is beyond measure, but just the same I have to mention how much I enjoy picking Art Pepper's short solo on Prelude To A Nightmare. On the other hand, trying to pick out Coltrane (on rare alto sax) is like looking for Waldo.

What's wrong with a little more bebop? It was okay back then, and it's pretty damn good now, especially since those 78's are either gone or are unplayable. When younger I got a big kick out of Babs and his "Capitolizing." Thanx for the reverie, Hook.
This is a fine old mix. The most forgettable vocals, alongside crackling instrumental work.
Not the best fo Dizzy's Big Band - a bit of a doldrums as regards material, and arrangements nto exactly sparkling. But the playing is good.
I hope to make out Ed Gregory's alto. He always had a zesty sound and zippy attack on that instrument - the Monk quintets with Milt Jackson being the classic example. Like Tab or perhaps Willie Smith on bebop.
Thanks for this!
MAny thanks for all your gems
Any chance you can repost this one? It would be appreciated!
New link for those interested. Good stuff. Sorry about the garish colors in the review. Didn't feel like going back and editing.
Leave a comment if you're digging this stuff, please.
